Modern geospatial.
We build the data systems, analytics pipelines, and web applications that turn authoritative geospatial data into actionable intelligence.
Get in TouchThe Platform
Dark Star Geographics operates a cloud-native spatial data warehouse integrating authoritative datasets at national scale — soil surveys, agricultural statistics, crop classification, satellite imagery, weather and climate models, terrain, land cover, biomass, demographics, and tax parcels — unified into a single analytical environment spanning the continental United States.
Data Infrastructure
Over 30 dataset families spanning agriculture, environment, infrastructure, and population. Indexed, cross-referenced, and continuously maintained at national scale through cloud-native pipelines engineered for terabyte-scale workloads.
Analytics & Modeling
Spatial supply chain optimization, biomass estimation, facility siting, suitability analysis, and scenario modeling. Built on road-network routing, constraint-based allocation, and cross-dataset analytics.
Web Applications
Interactive mapping platforms, regional dashboards, and decision support tools that deliver complex geospatial analysis through interfaces anyone can use. No GIS expertise required.
What We Do
We work with universities, government agencies, and private sector partners on projects that require deep geospatial infrastructure and domain expertise.
Custom Geospatial Analytics
Spatial modeling for agriculture, biomass logistics, land use, environmental assessment, and regional planning, leveraging our national-scale data infrastructure and processing pipelines.
Interactive Mapping & Dashboards
Web-based mapping platforms with drill-down navigation from national to parcel scale, real-time data layers, and regional analytics dashboards with precomputed statistics.
Decision Support Applications
Turn-key scenario analysis tools that let investigators, planners, and stakeholders adjust parameters and visualize results without GIS software or programming.
Products
Our platforms are built on the same spatial data warehouse and analytics engine that powers our research and consulting work.
Terrapin
Interactive mapping and analytics platform covering 165+ million parcels across 3,100+ U.S. counties with thousands of data layers. Drill down from national views to individual parcels with statistics, charts, and dashboards at every scale. Entering free preview soon.
GeoAg
Agricultural intelligence platform being developed in partnership with university research programs. Combines satellite imagery, crop statistics, soil survey data, and weather with field-level analytics for vegetation health monitoring, land use change analysis, and agricultural modeling. Under active development.
Frequently Asked Questions
Dark Star Geographics is a geospatial technology company based in Knoxville, Tennessee. We’ve assembled dozens of large-scale national datasets into a unified spatial data warehouse, then built the cloud-native pipelines, analytics engine, and modern web mapping interfaces to make that data useful. The company was founded by a researcher with nearly three decades of experience building spatial modeling systems for agricultural and bioenergy applications at a land-grant university. Our mission is to make professional-grade geospatial data and analytics accessible to everyone.
Terrapin is our interactive mapping and analytics platform covering the entire continental United States. It brings together land cover, agriculture, soils, weather, demographics, satellite imagery, terrain, and parcel data, with many layers spanning historical records going back decades, daily and monthly snapshots, and real-time conditions and forecasts. Data is aggregated into regional views with statistics at the national, state, county, and parcel level. Terrapin is entering free preview soon.
GeoAg is our agricultural intelligence platform, being developed in partnership with university research programs. It combines satellite imagery, crop statistics, soil survey data, and weather with academic research and agricultural extension knowledge to deliver field-level analytics. Early capabilities include vegetation health monitoring with anomaly detection, land use change analysis, and agricultural modeling. GeoAg is under active development.
We work on projects that require national-scale geospatial data infrastructure and spatial modeling expertise: biomass supply estimation and logistics optimization, agricultural analytics, land use and environmental assessment, facility siting, and custom decision support applications. Our clients and partners include universities, government agencies, and private sector organizations.
Yes. We build turn-key mapping dashboards and analytics tools configured for specific regions, data layers, and use cases. Government agencies, universities, and organizations can get custom configurations of our platform tailored to their geography and mission. We handle all hosting, data management, and updates so you get a polished, maintained product without building or managing geospatial infrastructure.
Our primary focus is the continental United States, covering over 3,100 counties from coast to coast. Data is available at national, state, county, and parcel scales depending on the product and layer. Our platforms compute regional statistics at every level, powering the dashboard metrics and analytics that make the data actionable.
ArcGIS and similar tools are powerful professional platforms, but they’re built for GIS specialists and aren’t designed for broad accessibility. We focus on delivering deep geospatial analytics through modern web interfaces that anyone can use. Our spatial data warehouse integrates authoritative datasets into a unified analytical environment, and our platforms surface cross-dataset insights that no single data source could reveal on its own, without specialized training or expensive licensing.
Let’s work together.
Whether you need geospatial analytics, custom mapping, spatial modeling, or access to national-scale data, we’d like to hear from you.
